► Brief Description
For the GE AB2-7 ultrasound probe, the Acoustic Lens is the grey, curved outer surface that makes contact with the patient. It is the most vulnerable part of the transducer and is critical for both image quality and patient safety.
► Features
- Elevation Focusing: While the electronic array focuses the beam horizontally (lateral), the physical curvature of the acoustic lens focuses the beam in the elevation plane (slice thickness). This narrows the “beam slice” to improve contrast and detail.
- Patient Isolation: Acts as a dielectric barrier, providing electrical insulation between the internal high-voltage transducers and the patient’s skin.
- Environmental Seal: Protects the delicate internal crystals from moisture, ultrasound gel, and chemical disinfectants.
- Refraction Control: Like an optical lens, it bends ultrasound waves to ensure they converge at the correct focal depth for abdominal and OB/GYN scanning.
