► Brief Description

The function of a ureterorenoscope (URS) is primarily to allow a urologist to visualize, diagnose, and treat conditions in the upper urinary tract, which includes the ureter (the tube carrying urine from the kidney to the bladder) and the renal pelvis/calyces (the collecting system inside the kidney).

► Features

• Adopts a sapphire lens that is heat-resistant, wear-resistant, and has a clear field of view.
• Visualization and Diagnosis: It allows the urologist to directly inspect the lining of the ureter and the kidney’s collecting system (renal pelvis and calyces) to find and diagnose abnormalities.
• Stone Treatment (Lithotripsy): This is one of the most common uses. The URS is used to access kidney and ureteral stones, after which various tools can be passed through the scope’s working channel to break up and/or remove the stones.
• Stricture Management: It can be used to treat narrowings (strictures) in the ureter by incising the scar tissue (ureterotomy) or placing a temporary stent to keep the area open.
• Tumor Surveillance and Biopsy: The scope can be used to inspect suspicious areas, take tissue samples (biopsy) from the lining of the ureter or kidney, and sometimes even treat small, low-grade tumors using electrocautery or a laser.
• Foreign Body Retrieval: Removing objects that have migrated into the upper urinary tract.
